In a Class of its own

Dimensions

The Belfast fills a very useful niche between smaller aircraft such
as the C130 Hercules and the larger Antonov 124.

The Belfast cargo bay dimensions are 25.7 m in length with a basic cross section of 3.66m x 3.66m (12 feet by 12 feet), the aft area being more than 4m tall, allowing many helicopters to be transported without the need for rotor head removal.

It is large enough to accommodate all modern transport fan-jet engines without difficulty and loaded with the aid of the on-board electric winch.

The Belfast is unrivalled in freighting of large or uniquely sized and shaped cargo. It can carry signiificantly more than the Hercules. Of the serious options only the C5 Galaxy can carry larger cargo with such versatility.

The cabin is 3.6 metres wide at its narrowest point and is 4.6 metres high except where the main spar protrudes into the cabin where it drops to 3.66 metres.

The Belfast main deck is 19.3 metres long, fitted with rollers to ease pallet loading, and an electronic winch on the ramp. The main deck can carry pallets of 6.3 metres length.

Range

The range of the Belfast varies from 700nm to over 3000nm depending on the load. The potential mission range of the Belfast without refuelling covers virtually all of Oceania as well as South East Asia. With refuelling stops in New Zealand or Darwin the range is extended dramatically.

  • 33 tonnes pay-load can be
    carried 700 nm (1300 km)
  • 20 tonnes can be carried
    2,100 nm (3900 km)
  • 11 tonne load can be lifted over 3,000 nm (5,555 km)
  • Typically, 28 tonnes can be
    lifted 1,200 nm (2220 km)
